Google has made its SynthID Text technology publicly available, allowing developers to create watermarks and detect text generated by artificial intelligence models.

The company has made the source code for SynthID Text available to developers, which can be downloaded from Google’s GitHub and Responsible GenAI platforms.

"It is freely accessible to developers and businesses, helping them identify content generated by artificial intelligence," Google states in a post on X. The company asserts that

SynthID Text maintains the quality, accuracy, and speed of text generation, even with content that has been trimmed, paraphrased, or altered. However, Google also recognizes that its watermarking approach has certain limitations. For example, SynthID Text is less effective with short text, text that has been rewritten or translated from another language, or responses to factual queries.

Google is not alone in its efforts to develop watermarking technology for AI-generated content. OpenAI has been exploring this area for years but has postponed its release due to technical and commercial challenges.
